TipUseful information
on the culture of Cambodia
  • Sarong is a women’s traditional dress made in a large piece of cloth. Women also wear kroma, also a piece of cloth, on their head. Men wear the sarong as shorts
  • Weddings are usually held during the dry season from December to May on the road in front of the house or an empty lot with a shade put up for two days. A traditional marriage ceremony is held in the morning, and a reception follows from the evening.
Transportation
  • Smartphone applications for grabbing taxis (Grab, PassApp, etc.) are frequently used by people. Users mark their locations and desired destinations on the application's map, so there is no hassle to explain to the driver. The fare is also automatically calculated, taking away the need to negotiate prices.
  • Some of the main means of transportation in downtown Phnom Penh are motodop (motorbike) and tuk-tuk (reformed motorbike), taxi, and bus.
    • → Motodop (motorbike) : The cheapest transport. Customers take the back seat of the driver. It is economic and fast, but vulnerable to accidents.
    • → Tuk-tuk (reformed motorbike) : A motorbike pulls a carriage that can fit up to four people. It is the most widely used and popular transport.
    • → Taxi : It is often used through smartphone applications. It is slightly more expensive than a tuk-tuk.
    • → Bus : There are 7 routes operated by Phnom Penh. More customers are using this means after the implementation of new vehicles and shorter intervals between bus schedules. The fare is reasonable, but it is less comfortable because of long bus intervals and not enough bus routes.
  • Transport for provincial areas : Buses and minibuses are frequently used to go to provincial regions.
Telecommunication (phone)
  • Wireless communication is more developed than wired communication. Mobile phone plans are economic.
  • Users can choose among five telecommunication providers. LTE service is available, but it is a lot slower compared to Korea.
  • Prepaid phones are more often used with a SIM card.
Mailing system
  • Regular mails usually take about 2-3 weeks for domestic delivery. Sometimes, it can take up to 1 month.
  • It is safe to use express postal services (e.g. EMS, DHL) for important mails that should not get lost. In case of EMS, mail recipients should visit the post office to receive the mail.
